Fall HVAC Prep: 7 Steps Before Heating Season

Why Fall Maintenance Matters

Your heating system sat idle for months. Dust settled on the heat exchanger, filters clogged, and electrical connections loosened through summer's humidity. Firing it up without inspection is like starting a car that sat in the garage since April.

The 7-Step Fall Checklist

  1. Replace the air filter. A clean filter is the single biggest efficiency lever. Use a pleated MERV 8–11 filter for most homes.

  2. Clear the area around your furnace. Keep at least 3 feet of clearance. No boxes, paint cans, or holiday decorations leaning against the unit.

  3. Test the thermostat. Switch to heat mode and set it 2 degrees above room temp. You should hear the igniter click within 60 seconds.

  4. Inspect visible ductwork. Look for disconnected joints, crushed flex duct, or gaps at the register boots. Tape what you can reach.

  5. Check the exhaust vent. Make sure the PVC exhaust pipe outside isn't blocked by leaves, snow, or animal nests.

  6. Replace batteries in smoke and CO detectors. Heating season is when carbon monoxide incidents spike.

  7. Schedule professional maintenance. A tech will measure combustion efficiency, inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, and calibrate gas pressure.
